A bright future:聽 Morley鈥檚 T Level in Jewellery Design聽
91视频 is training the next generation of skilled jewellery-makers with its new T Level qualification in Craft and Design: Jewellery-Maker. Morley is one of only two colleges in England to offer the in-depth technical qualification aimed at 16 鈥 18-year-olds with a passion for jewellery design.
For T Level Week, we visited Morley鈥檚 first cohort of T Level jewellery students at the North Kensington Centre for Skills, who started on the full-time course in September.

Alice, 16, says, 鈥淚t is very hands-on and takes all your concentration. Jewellery-making is a way to be creative鈥nd it鈥檚 a great environment to learn.鈥
Alice and her classmates are taught a range of creative techniques 鈥 from soldering and piercing to filing and forging. They learn to use professional-grade equipment in a modern, light-filled studio setting.
The course is taught by Morley tutors and professional jewellery-makers Jenny Macdonald and Rebecca Ilett.聽Rebecca says, 鈥淭here are very few colleges in London that have got a dedicated jewellery workshop and a forging room, so we’re very lucky to have them. And it’s a brilliant place to learn.鈥濃 聽
The course is eighty per cent hands-on skills development and twenty per cent work placements. Scarlett, 20, spent the past year assisting in a jewellery studio before joining the T level course last month. She comments:
鈥淵ou come in every week, we are always making something new. I enjoy how creative you can be and how you are given lots of opportunities to try out new things – and you are constantly improving your work. There are lots of opportunities – we also go to trips and can make contacts with industry people.鈥

Industry connections
Last month, the class visited the prestigious annual Goldsmith鈥檚 Fair, hosted by the historic Goldsmith鈥檚 Company. At the Fair, they met leading jewellery and silversmith makers. Rebecca comments, 鈥淚 was very impressed with the students’ attitude and the way they interacted on our visit to the Goldsmiths Fair – I was so impressed. They are enthusiastic, getting down to the work and really interested!鈥

Jobs in Jewellery
While advanced digital processes may have taken the place of some traditional making practices, the fine hand-skills required to make jewellery continue to be in demand.
鈥淛ewellery-making relies on dexterity, problem solving, really, really fine-tuned attention to detail, that I can already see in our class. AI is not going to be able to make jewellery!鈥
鈥淭he students who graduate from this course can either go into an apprenticeship scheme or they can do a foundation course, which is another extra year before an apprenticeship. But there are jobs for them – particularly as the jewellery trade people tend to be older and they want to retire. So, we need to have young people with the skills to take their places. And there are jewellery studios that want skilled apprentices – and there are not enough of them,鈥 explains Rebecca.
A qualification that opens doors
T Levels offer a stimulating hands-on experience – resulting in a Level Three qualification equivalent to 3 A levels: a route into higher education, apprenticeships or skilled employment.
Alice says, 鈥淚 would definitely recommend T Levels. It is a big change from secondary school – and I think, for anyone who wants something new, it is a really good option – you get work experience along with the course – and it is just a great way to learn!鈥
The T Level in jewellery is one of the eight exciting T level courses at Morley starting in September 2026. Why not visit us on one of our 91视频 – where you can meet our tutors, tour our facilities, and find out more about the enriching student experience at Morley.
